Walk into a house in Mohenjo-daro around 2500 BCE and you might find something that wouldn’t reach most of Europe for another four thousand years: a private bathroom, with a brick-lined drain carrying the waste out to a covered sewer running beneath the street.
Not a pit. Not a bucket. Plumbing.
The people who built this city left no pyramids, no throne rooms full of gold, no boastful inscriptions about god-kings. What they left instead was arguably more radical — a network of cities so clean, so orderly, and so quietly sophisticated that archaeologists spent decades underestimating them. This is the Indus Valley Civilization, and it deserves to be as famous as Egypt and Mesopotamia. It just refuses to brag.

The first thing that hits you about Mohenjo-daro and its sister city Harappa is the grid. Main streets run straight, oriented roughly to the compass points, crossed by smaller lanes at right angles. This is city planning — deliberate, top-down, executed at scale — in the Bronze Age.
Then there are the bricks. The Indus builders used fired mud bricks in a standardized ratio of 4:2:1 (length to width to height), the same proportions across cities hundreds of kilometres apart. Standardization like that doesn’t happen by accident. It implies shared rules, shared measurement, and someone — or some system — making sure everyone followed them.
At its height, from roughly 2600 to 1900 BCE, this civilization sprawled across an area larger than ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia combined, covering much of present-day Pakistan and northwest India.

For all their organization, the Indus people are, in one crucial way, silent to us. They left writing — more than 400 distinct signs, stamped onto small seals and pottery — and we cannot read a word of it.
The inscriptions are frustratingly short, often just a handful of symbols, which starves codebreakers of the patterns they need. There’s no Rosetta Stone, no bilingual text pairing the script with a known language. Scholars can’t even agree on what language it encoded, or whether the marks represent a full language at all.
So we have their cities, their tools, their toys, their drains — and none of their words. We know how they lived in extraordinary detail, and almost nothing about what they thought.
Why did it all end?
Around 1900 BCE, the great cities began to empty. Not in a single dramatic collapse — no ash layer of invasion, no clear catastrophe — but a gradual unravelling. Urban life faded; people dispersed into smaller villages to the east.
The leading explanation today is environmental. Long-term climate change appears to have weakened the summer monsoon, and shifts in the region’s river systems — including rivers that dried up or changed course — would have undercut the agriculture the cities depended on. Starve the farms slowly enough, and even the best-planned city quietly comes apart.
It wasn’t a bang. It was a long, dry sigh.
