India won 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze medals at the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, held from 19 September to 4 October 2026. The men's and women's teams took gold in cricket, hockey and kabaddi, and the women's recurve archers beat South Korea 5-3 for India's first team gold in that event.
India finished fourth on the medal table of the 20th Asian Games with 85 medals: 21 gold, 27 silver and 37 bronze. The Games ran in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, from 19 September to 4 October 2026, and the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) gave the same figures in its report of 5 October. The final table

India closed the Games on 27 silvers, fourth overall, according to All India Radio.
The sports ministry’s send-off release of 8 September described a 503-member contingent and said more than 300 of its athletes were first-timers at the Asian Games.
Six team golds in cricket, hockey and kabaddi
DD News lists six team golds: men’s and women’s cricket, hockey and kabaddi. The six finals ran from 22 September to 3 October.
The women’s cricket team won India’s first gold of the Games on 22 September, beating Sri Lanka by 147 runs. The women’s hockey team beat China 1-0 on 2 October. Lalremsiami scored in the 10th minute, and goalkeeper Savita Punia saved a penalty stroke. It was India’s first women’s hockey gold at the Asian Games since the 3-0 win over Singapore in Delhi in 1982, and it carried a direct place at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, The Week reported.
On 3 October the men’s cricket team made 211 for 6 against Pakistan and won by 19 runs, with Abhishek Sharma scoring 61 off 28 balls and Tilak Varma 51 not out, Business Today reported. The men’s hockey team beat Malaysia 5-1 the same day, with two goals from captain Harmanpreet Singh and one each from Jugraj Singh, Hardik Singh and Shilanand Lakra. Archery: five golds, and a first team gold over South Korea
Archery produced nine medals and five golds, the most golds of any sport for India at these Games, according to DD News.
The women’s recurve team of Ankita Bhakat, Kirti and Kumkum Mohod beat South Korea 5-3 in the final on 2 October. World Archery reported it as India’s first Asian Games gold in the event and the end of Korea’s run of seven straight team titles, which began in 1998.
Mohod, 17, won the individual title the next day. She beat Korea’s Kang Chaeyoung, the 2025 world champion, in the round of 16, and the final against Oh Yejin finished level at 5-5 before Mohod won the shoot-off with a 10 to Oh’s 8, according to Korea JoongAng Daily. It was the first time Korea’s women went home without a recurve gold at an Asian Games, and the win earned India a place in the women’s individual recurve event at Los Angeles 2028, World Archery said. The OCA recorded Mohod’s three medals, two of them gold.
India also won three compound team golds. The women’s team of Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Chikitha Taniparthi and Prithika Pradeep beat China 238-234 on 30 September, equalling the world record for the format, Outlook reported.
Shooting, boxing, wrestling and golf
Neeru Dhanda won the women’s trap on 29 September with 28 hits out of 30, then took the mixed team trap gold with Kynan Chenai. DD News described hers as the first individual shotgun gold by an Indian woman at the Games. She carried the Indian flag at the closing ceremony, All India Radio reported. Shooting brought 15 medals: three gold, eight silver and four bronze.
Boxing brought three golds and three bronzes. On 2 October Lovlina Borgohain won the 75kg final 5-0 against China’s Bao Ziyi, Parveen Hooda won the 65kg and Ankush Panghal the 80kg. DD News said Borgohain is the second Indian woman to win Asian Games boxing gold, after Mary Kom.
In wrestling, Sujeet Kalkal beat the reigning Olympic champion, Japan’s Kotaro Kiyooka, in the 65kg semi-final. In the final against Tajikistan’s Abdulmazhid Kudiev he trailed 2-9 and won 10-9, the OCA reported. Aman Sehrawat won the 57kg gold, and wrestling finished with six medals, two of them gold.
Pranavi Urs, 23, won the women’s individual golf title on 3 October at 15 under par, 265, one stroke clear. All India Radio reported that she is the first Indian woman golfer to win Asian Games gold and that it was India’s first golf gold at the Games since Shiv Kapur’s in 2002. She, Aditi Ashok and Diksha Dagar also took team silver.
In athletics, India’s largest source of medals at 24, the women’s 4x400m relay team won the one gold. Kiran, Poovamma Machettira, Prachi and Vithya Ramraj ran 3:29.69 on 29 September, ahead of Bahrain at 3:30.21 and China at 3:31.02, Khaleej Times reported. Ramraj also won mixed relay silver and 400m hurdles bronze.
Honours and the Prime Minister’s message
The Indian Olympic Association named Mohod and Kalkal the first recipients of its new Jaspal Rana Award for the best female athlete and Raja Randhir Singh Award for the best male athlete, announced by its president, P. T. Usha, the OCA reported on 5 October. On 4 October Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on X, in DD News’s report: “Congratulations to all our medal winners, whose performances have brought immense joy to the nation.”
Where 85 sits against Hangzhou
India’s best Asian Games result remains Hangzhou in 2023, where DD News counts 106 medals, 28 of them gold. The sports ministry’s release of 5 March 2026 gave the target as surpassing that haul, and the Aichi-Nagoya total of 85 medals and 21 golds is below it. Shooting brought 15 medals against 22 at Hangzhou, DD News reported, and athletics, with 24 medals, produced one gold.
What the Games set up
Both hockey teams, DD News reported, and Mohod in women’s individual recurve, World Archery reported, go to Los Angeles 2028 with places already secured. The next Asian Games are in Doha in 2030, and the OCA flag was handed to Qatar at the closing ceremony in Nagoya on 4 October.
Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said at the September send-off that the target is 2036 and that more than Rs 36,000 crore (Rs 360 billion) is allocated over a ten-year plan for sports infrastructure. The OCA reported on 7 October that India is one of seven parties in continuous dialogue with the International Olympic Committee about the 2036 Games. India is due to present its project to the IOC’s Future Host Commission in November 2026, the IOC Executive Board is to shortlist candidates in March 2027, and IOC members are expected to elect the host in mid-2029.
