Shubman Gill's unbeaten 223 off 117 balls helped India chase down 406 runs for the biggest successful run chase in its One Day International history, scientists in Gujarat sent a secure message across 5.56 kilometers of open air using the physics of light instead of math, and electric car sales in India hit an all time high with Tesla outselling Mercedes-Benz for the first time.
Shubman Gill walked out to open the batting in Guwahati chasing a target of 406 against the West Indies, higher than any Indian team had ever chased successfully in One Day International cricket. He finished unbeaten on 223, and India won by eight wickets with six overs to spare.
The fastest double century anyone has hit in a one day international
Gill reached 200 in just 117 balls on September 30 at Barsapara Cricket Stadium, breaking the previous record for the fastest ODI double hundred by a wide margin. His 223 not out is now also the highest individual score by any batter in a successful ODI run chase, and the highest ever scored by a captain in the format. He built the innings alongside Rohit Sharma, who made 101 as the pair put on 255 runs for the first wicket. Rohit crossed 12,000 career ODI runs in the process, becoming only the third Indian to reach that mark after Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli.
West Indies had set the target by posting 405 for 7, their highest ever ODI total against India, built on centuries from John Campbell, Shai Hope and Amir Jangoo. India’s reply of 406 is now the second highest successful chase in ODI history, behind only South Africa’s chase of 438 against Australia in 2006, and the highest any Indian team has ever completed. The win sealed the series 2-0 with a match still to play.
A message sent across 5.56 kilometers using the physics of light instead of math
Indian researchers sent an encrypted message across 5.56 kilometers of open air using single particles of light rather than conventional encryption, the country’s first demonstration of free space quantum key distribution at that range.
The trial, run on the night of September 27 into September 28 by the Bengaluru firm QNu Labs together with the Bhaskaracharya National Institute for Space Applications and Geo-informatics and IIT Gandhinagar, built a working quantum link between the two institutions’ rooftops. Ordinary encryption relies on math problems that are hard to solve, which means a powerful enough computer could eventually crack them. Quantum key distribution instead encodes the key in the quantum state of single photons fired through open air, so that any attempt to intercept the signal disturbs the photons in a way both ends can detect.
The link achieved a secure key rate of 230 to 260 bits per second with a quantum bit error rate under 5 percent, using a pointing and tracking system from QNu Labs to keep a narrow beam of 1550 nanometer light locked on target across open atmosphere. The team then fed the resulting keys into BISAG-N’s Vedic Kavach platform, which combines them with newer post quantum cryptography methods, and used the combined system to encrypt and decrypt test messages end to end. Free space links like this one matter because they skip the fiber optic cable that most quantum key distribution trials have relied on, opening a path toward securing communication with satellites and other hard to wire locations.
Electric cars had their best month ever, and Tesla beat Mercedes for the first time
Indian retail buyers registered 35,995 electric passenger vehicles in September, the highest monthly total the segment has recorded and a 98 percent jump from the 18,520 sold in September 2025.
It was the fourth straight month above 30,000 units, pushing sales for the first half of the 2027 fiscal year to 190,946 vehicles, up 88 percent from the same stretch a year earlier. Tata Motors led the market with 14,769 units sold, good for a 41 percent share and its own best month yet, edging past the 14,388 it sold in July. Kia overtook Maruti Suzuki for fifth place in the overall rankings, while Toyota’s Urban Cruiser Ebella posted its highest sales since launch.
The luxury end of the market set its own record, with 975 electric vehicles sold in the premium segment, up 60 percent from 608 a year earlier and past the previous high of 853 set in June. BMW kept its lead among luxury electric sellers with 502 units, but the bigger surprise sat further down the table: Tesla sold 291 units to outsell Mercedes-Benz in India for the first time, taking a 30 percent share of the luxury electric segment in the process.
